Mute a stream

Messages from muted streams do not show up in All messages or generate notifications, unless you are mentioned. Messages from muted streams do not generate alert word notifications.

Muted streams still appear in the left sidebar, but they are grayed out and sorted to the bottom of their section.

Note: Some parts of the Zulip experience may start to degrade if you receive more than a few hundred muted messages a day.

Mute a stream

  1. Hover over a stream in the left sidebar.

  2. Click on the ellipsis ().

  3. Click Mute stream.

  1. Press and hold a stream until the long-press menu appears.

  2. Tap Mute stream.

If you are in a stream view, you can access the long-press menu from the bar at the top of the app.

Unmute a stream

  1. Hover over a stream in the left sidebar.

  2. Click on the ellipsis ().

  3. Click Unmute stream.

  1. Press and hold a stream until the long-press menu appears.

  2. Tap Unmute stream.

If you are in a stream view, you can access the long-press menu from the bar at the top of the app.

Alternate method to mute or unmute a stream

  1. Go to Subscribed streams.

  2. Select a stream.

  3. Select the Personal tab on the right.

  4. Under Personal settings, toggle Mute stream.

  1. Press and hold a stream until the long-press menu appears.

  2. Tap Stream settings.

  3. Toggle Muted.

If you are in a stream view, you can access the stream settings menu from the information (information) button in the top right corner of the app.
